Meeting Notes by Caroline : Monday 12th July, 2010

Twelve people attended tonight's meeting at Irene's house: Irene, Rachael, Marcie, Trish, Sarah, Jo, Claire, Kay, Rosemary, Kevin, Gavin and Caroline. Only Lynne and Nicola were missing. We raised our glasses to Sarah who is leaving Cambridge to join her partner in Woking.

Most of us had read and enjoyed "Deaf Sentence" by David Lodge, though there was a general feeling that he failed to fulfill promise of exploring certain themes. At the same time the fact that he had raised certain expectations in the reader was seen to be a positive element. Most of us found the language both easy to read and funny, and also poignant -- two members at least shed tears. Altogether the character of Desmond Bates and the events of his life ring true, despite the possibly arbitrary inclusion of incidents like to visit to Auschwitz.

The next meeting will be at Rachael's house at 7:30 on Monday 9th August. At that meeting each member will explain why they chose a particular book from the "rejected" books of the past year, and what they thought of the book. Nicola will suggest three books from which the group will choose one for discussion in September.
